Case Study Cabin Foundations in Northern Finland: Reliable Year-Round Performance ApplicationResidential LocationNorthern Finland StructureHoliday cabins ConditionsArctic winter, deep frost FeatureFrost-resistant installation Ground frost to over two metres. Temperatures well below −30 °C. Remote sites with limited road access. Northern Finland is about as tough as foundation conditions get. In this project, foundations for two prefabricated cabins had to be finished on an unexpectedly tight schedule. Once the cabin delivery date was confirmed, foundation work needed to start without heavy site preparations to keep the project on track. Helical piling was clearly the smartest option. The job came in urgently during peak season, so it was fitted in between other tasks and installation began on a summer evening. The long northern daylight hours allowed smooth work through the night, and the entire piling was completed overnight. Piles were supplied by Paalupiste, with installation handled by partner Konepalvelu Kuivas Oy. The helical piles were screwed directly into place without any digging or soil replacement. No frost insulation or drainage was needed, so the site stayed clean and prep work was minimal. After installation, the piles were cut to the right height and fitted with pile caps. These caps have pre-drilled holes for attaching the timber frame. Both centred and offset versions are available – in the offset type, the collar tube is welded slightly to the side, letting the cap rotate on the pile head to fine-tune small alignment variations. Along with the cabin piles, helical pile foundations were also installed for the terraces. The next day, the cabins arrived by truck and were craned straight onto the ready, precisely levelled foundations. Everything lined up perfectly with no waiting or extra adjustments, and construction continued right away with water and sewer connections. This project shows exactly why helical piles are ideal for summer cabins, allotment gardens and cabin village developments. Foundations go in fast and clean without major earthworks. Installation works year-round, including in winter – unlike concrete, which cannot be poured in freezing temperatures without special measures. The compact equipment reaches remote lakeside and forest plots where larger machinery would struggle, and the piles leave no excavation marks. Project photos Click to enlarge. All case studies
