Case Study Walled Garden in Crawley: 10 Screw Piles for a Glass House and Workshop ApplicationGarden building LocationCrawley, United Kingdom Piles10 pcs, helical Ø88.9 mm Pile length4 m GroundHeavy clay / shale In a walled garden in Crawley, UKHelix installed 10 Finnish-made helical piles to carry the ground beam for a new glass house and garden workshop. The piles were taken down to 4 metres through heavy clay and shale. Heavy clay and shale make for hard going, but they also give a screw pile plenty to grip. UKHelix monitored the installation torque live as each pile went down, and every pile reached torque to spare, comfortably double the figure the project called for. With the 10 piles installed, the ground beam could be formed straight onto them, giving the new glass house and garden workshop a solid foundation on what began as heavy clay and shale.
